| BAND: "Soft wave... like a green forest... I felt the purity." - random guy from the audience after a show, 2008 ![]() left to right: Kimmo Kärkkäinen: bass, Luca Di Giovanni: drums, Janne Pajari: vocals, Olli Sopanen: guitar, Matti Lötjönen: guitar -Alternative hard rock with a wide variety of influences from Sabbath to Bowie to punk JANNE: I guess we're a grunge band at heart but we love all kinds of music and get bored easily if we try to write the same song over and over again. We never set out to write a rulebook for this band in the first place, but when you take a bunch of music-loving kids who got their first guitars in the beginning of the Nineties, what do you get? Heavy alternative rock with an open mind? I think that can lead to pretty interesting results. We want to make music that's both surprising and accessible at the same time, but not middle-of-the-road." -Albums: Almost Over Everything (2005, Gbfam Records), Sleepwalkers (2007, Gbfam Records (FIN), Dockyard1 (Europe)) JANNE: "We produced our debut album ourselves over a span of nearly 12 months in 2004-05. Needless to say it was a learning experience that taught us a lot. While we did ok in the overall sound department, the end result was pretty messy because of over-producing and over-thinking. Nevertheless the album got some good reviews. But after that it was clear to us that we'd like to work faster to stay sharp in the studio, which meant hiring producer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Paradise Lost) for our next album, Sleepwalkers (2007). It came out pretty consistent and straight ahead rocking, we got pretty good airplay in Finland with the single Whenever You Say You Love Me and got the album released in whole Europe by German label Dockyard1." -120 shows played in Finland and rest of Europe 2005-2008 -Currently in pre-production for album no. 3, aiming for late 2009 / early 2010 release JANNE: "The new songs... there's a lot of varied stuff for sure [...], think Faith No More's King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime. Think Black Sabbath from Electric Funeral to Planet Caravan, think punk. Think R.E.M. in a particularly bad mood. Think Nirvana trying to play Type O Negative covers. Sort of an "anything goes" approach going on, but there's the overall mood keeping it all together." KIMMO: "Hopefully it will be an interesting listen. The records I love the most are diverse, have a unique sound and personality, and the songs are great and catchy without sounding labored or over-thought. I think we're aiming for that kind of thing." A BRIEF HISTORY 1994 - 2002: Janne, Kimmo, Luca and Olli start playing music, boozing and growing up together. Inspired mainly by Black Sabbath, Nirvana and Guns N' Roses, they record a couple of demos worth of cringeworthy grunge rock under different band names such as Larha and The Lost Soul Movement, play close to a hundred gigs around Finland and finally start to get a hang of these things after their teenage years. 2003: Matti joins while Olli is temporarily out of the group pursuing other interests. The guys decide to start working harder after years of doodling around. 2004: Record deal with Tampere, Finland-based indie label Gbfam Records. The band is once again renamed, this time to Day Eleven, which sticks. Debut single "Lost My Love" released in October. 2005: Self-produced debut album "Almost Over Everything", recorded over a span of 12 months, released in May. Mixed reviews and not much else follows. However, Olli rejoins and the band play dozens of shows in support of the album. Fueled by their newly-found love of sounding like a five-piece band, instead of the studio trickery of their debut, they start writing for the next album by the end of the year. 2006: Day Eleven hire producer Jens Bogren and start recording their second album at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden. 2007: New single "Whenever You Say You Love Me" hits the airwaves at the beginning of the year. Second album "Sleepwalkers" released to great reviews in Finland in March. The band tour Finland and Germany, and Sleepwalkers is released in the rest of Europe in the autumn by German label Dockyard1. 2008: Extensive pre-production for the next album with some gigging here and there. 2009: Recording sessions for new album "Matador" start in October. |
